Birding in Westlock county

22 Nov, 2020

This Sunday we drove up to the Westlock county to look for Great Grey Owls. We started out driving around Eeg Lake looking for Snowy Owls. Sadly we were not able to locate any. Despite our luck with the Snowys, I did spot my first large flock of Bohemian Waxwings of the winter.

We continued north towards the town of Dapp were we encountered a flock of 50 Pine Grosbeaks. I stayed for a while photographing them while they fed on frozen berries hanging on the frosted willows. The -17 degree weather slowed the action but these little rosy birds didn't seem to mind it as they foraged through the trees.

As we continued north to 50 Shades meadows we spotted a flock of about 100 Snow Buntings scattered in the snow feeding on the grass that penetrated through the white blanket.

We drove around in 50 shades meadows for about an hour until we found our target species the Great Grey Owl. Even though it was fairly dark when we spotted the GGOW, it was amazing to watch it as it hunted.

These beautiful Winter finches are a delight to photograph. Pine Grosebeaks male and female

This flock of Snow Buntings was pretty cooperative landing and taking of no further than 20ft away from me.

This Great Grey Owl was a pleasure to watch as it hunted in the willows
